Oklahoma Celebrates Direct Support Professionals
The work of direct support professionals will be honored and celebrated by DSP OK (Direct Support Professionals of Oklahoma) on Saturday, September 11 at the Tulsa Community College Northeast Campus. The DSP's R'OK event will feature a training, lunch and awards presentation. All direct support professionals are invited to attend! Travel stipends will be provided by the Oklahoma Developmental Disabilities Council and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
DSP OK is a chapter of National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). NADSP works to enhance the status of direct support professionals and promote the development of a highly competent human services workforce. NADSP is offering individual memberships at a reduced rate ($10) during the month of September to celebrate National DSP Recognition Week, September 12-19.
Thank You For Another Successful Book Drive!
We just completed our 7th annual book drive along with our partners Bank of Oklahoma and the News On 6. The Tulsa community has donated over 150,000 books in the past six years by dropping off new or used books at any Bank of Oklahoma location. Volunteers of America of Oklahoma and our non-profit partners provide all donated books to children and their families who have a limited number or no books of their own.
"We have a garage full of books," said John Selph, CEO of Volunteers of America of Oklahoma, "books that were collected this year, and this garage will not be full very long because those books are going to be distributed to early childhood education programs, literacy centers, lots of different summer programs and people will be in line to get those books."
One program receiving books from the BOK Book Drive is Project Transformation Summer Camp operated at Southern Hills United Methodist Church. "We have up to 70 kids from our neighborhood that come here, they get reading time one-on-one with a volunteer every day," said Pastor Jeff Jaynes, "BOK has been an amazing helper for us, for a kid to have a book that's theirs, that they can take home, that's an incredibly special thing."
Broken Arrow Welcomes New Affordable Senior Housing
Volunteers of America of Oklahoma completed construction on a new senior housing complex in Broken Arrow. This 37-unit complex opened in mid-August and an open house will be scheduled later this fall. The new two-story complex will have about 31,000 square feet and features a library, crafts area, lounge and a clubhouse for community activities.
Located at 2750 South Ash Court, the Broken Arrow Sequoyah Creek development is the eighth affordable senior housing complex for the organization. Volunteers of America of Oklahoma also operates three senior housing facilities in Kansas and four facilities in the Oklahoma City areas for individuals 62 years of age or older, or who have a disability, and meet the low-income requirement.
This project is funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Volunteers of America is one of the largest providers of affordable housing in the country. Nationally, the organization operates over 300 affordable housing properties in 31 states and are the largest recipient of HUD-awarded funding for senior housing and housing for the disabled. more>
